Chromecast Review

Recently we have purchased a chromecast device that allows us to stream videos, movies, web browser pages, music and more from our smart phones and tablets direct to the television. We received our chromecast the next day when purchasing it from Amazon.co.uk for £30.

The first thing that struck me was the quality packaging of this product. For the price I expected some flimsy plastic fronted packet but the Chromecast was packed in a very durable and solid (not cheap) box which I was very impressed with.

There are several different things included in the box these include:

  • 1x Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player
  • 1x HDMI Extender
  • 1x USB Power Cable
  • 1x Power Adapter

The setup was really easy, just plug the Chromecast device into a HDMI port of the television and plug it into the mains (power adaptor is supplied) and then download an app for your smart phone to install the chromecast and get it setup.

The chromecast uses your home wifi network to stream data from your smart phone or tablet. We have several ipads and iphones in our house and it just works, its great for when you have a group of friends over and you want to share some interesting video you found on YouTube on a big screen so you're not huddled around a smaller phone or tablet.

Features of the Chromecast by Google include:

  • Stream online video and music to your TV using your smartphone, tablet, or laptop
  • Supports Netflix, YouTube and Google Play Movies & Music
  • Works with Android, iOS , Windows, Mac and Chromebooks
  • Easy setup: plug into any HDTV and connect to your home Wifi Network
  • Everything you love, now on your TV
There are a few applications on your smart device that support chromecast and the product market for such compatibility is being expanded regularly.

Here's what the companies have to say about ChromeCast

"With Chromecast, you can easily enjoy your favourite online content on your HDTV – movies, TV programmes, music, photos and more from BBC iPlayer, Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies and TV, Google Play Music and Chrome. No more huddling around small screens and tiny speakers. Chromecast automatically updates to work with a growing number of apps. Certain applications are optimised for Chromecast. Streaming quality for other content may vary.

Remote-free: Chromecast works with Android tablets and smartphones, iPhone and iPad devices, Chrome for Windows, Chrome for Mac, and Chromebooks. Browse for what to watch, control playback and adjust volume using your device. You won't have to learn anything new.

Get started in three easy steps: Plug Chromecast into any HDTV, connect it to Wi-Fi, then send videos and more from your smartphone, tablet or laptop to your TV with the press of a button.

It's for everyone in your house: Friends and family can use your Chromecast with their smartphone, tablet or laptop without any additional setup."

Supported applications include
  • BBC iPlayer
  • Netflix
  • Youtube
  • BT Sport

The Verdict:
Overall I am extremely happy with the Chromecast Adaptor it makes viewing videos as a group a much more social event and its really quick and simple to setup and go! Its a hardy and durable product made by Google and there are many big applications which support the Chromecast and many more do plan on adopting this technology and integrating it into their applications.

I would highly recommend purchasing one if you love watching videos, movies, or want to share a internet browser on the tv, you can stream from a computer, laptop, mac, chromebook, android device, iphone or ipad!
