Review: Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption is one of my favourite PS3 games, it was developed by RockStar who also made the Grand Theft Auto games. Red Dead Redemption is by far one of the most enjoyable PS3 games out at the moment, although it has been out for many years now and is the second game of the Red Dead series even when you complete it numerous times the game is left open ended so you can go out and do whatever you so wish.

What is Red Dead Redemption?

Red Dead Redemption is basically Grand Theft Auto but set in the Wild West of America. Back to when it was cowboys and indians (actually just cowboys excluding the near ending plot). There is only one car in the game, this you cannot drive and your main method of transport is either on foot or on horseback.

I don't want to give much away but basically the story is you are a cowboy, an ex gang member who is going out to find and kill your ex-friend because he left you for dead, on order of the government, who kindly kidnapped your wife and son, so you will do their dirty work for them. Complete all the missions which vary from, find such an item, kill such a body, and gather this that and the other. Its much better than I am describing!

Whether you want to be a good guy or bad guy the game will change depending upon what you do in certain situations. The scenery and graphics of this game are STUNNING!

What can you do in Red Dead Redemption?

There are lots of different things you can do from hunting animals, gathering herbs and plants, capturing or killing wanted people for bounty, or just ride out into the sunset after taming those wild horses. There are several mini-games such as being on security watch at a ranch, shooting the gun from the hand of someone who has not taken kindly to you (or shooting them in the head if you so wish), and even down to holding up the local store and stealing their money, or rescuing passengers in stagecoaches which are under attack from bandits. One of the favourite pastimes of myself is hunting animals, skinning them and selling them to the local store.

What about extra content won't I get bored when finishing the game?

Well the good news is there have been lots of free add ons for Red Dead Redemption on the PlayStation3, XBOX 360 players are not so lucky, many add ons have to be purchased. For Halloween 2010 Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare which is an extra that can be bought from the PlayStation and XBOX store where you go around killing zombies (there is nothing quite as satisfying as seeing zombies being blown into pieces with an exploding rifle).

Basically you will NOT get bored. Additional to all the add ons, there is online multiplayer gameplay!

Whats better Red Dead Redemption on PS3 or Xbox?

I am one of those sad individuals who love the game so much I bought it for both XBox and PS3. If its graphics you are going for, then the XBox 360 graphics are far superior than those of the PS3. However if its game content you want, then get it for the PS3 as its FREE to play online unlike XBox Live. And the add ons are cheaper (in most cases FREE) for the PS3.

Will there be a sequel?

Firstly Red Dead Redemption is the sequel to Red Dead Revolver, this is a common misconception, if another Red Dead game were to come out it would make a trilogy!

The ending of Red Dead Redemption is somewhat frustrating leaving more questions than giving answers so yes there is plenty of room for another Red Dead Redemption game, and RockStar have unofficially announced that yes there will most likely be another Red Dead game hitting the shops in the future.
